COMPUTER HARDWARE

Hardware refers to the physical components of the computer. It is best described as a device that is physically connected to your computer or something that can be physically touched

External hardware:

  • Monitor
Monitor refers only to devices that contain no electronic equipment other than what is essentially needed to display and adjust the characteristics of an image.  It is often called as "computer screen" or "display." Older computer monitors were built using cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Most modern monitors are built using LCD technology and are commonly referred to as flat

  • Keyboard
A keyboard is the set of typewriter-like keys that enables you to enter data into a computer. Computer keyboards are similar to electric-typewriter keyboards but contain additional keys. The keys on computer keyboards are often classified as follows:
  1. alphanumeric keys : letters and numbers
  2. punctuation keys    : comma, period, semicolon, and so on.
  3. special keys           :  function keys, control keys, arrow keys, Caps Lock key, and so on.

  • Mouse
    www.bizandlegis.com
Mouse is a hardware input device that allows an individual to control a pointer in a graphical user interface (GUI) and manipulate on-screen objects such as icons, files, and folders. By using a mouse the user doesn't have to memorize commands, like those used in a text-based command line environment such as MS-DOS. we use a mouse by move, select, open, and viewing properties.
      Types of computer mice:

  1. Cordless (Wireless)
  2. Footmouse
  3. IntelliMouse (Wheel mouse)
  4. J mouse

  •  Speaker
A hardware device connected to a computer's sound card that outputs sounds generated by the computer. When computers were originally released they had on-board speakers that generated a series of different tones and beeps. As multimedia and games became popular, higher quality computers speakers began to be released that required additional power.

Internal hardware:
  • CD-ROM

cdn.computerhope.com

Short for Compact Disc-Read Only Memory, CD-ROM drives or optical drives are CD players inside computers that can have speeds in the range from 1x and beyond, and have the capability of playing audio CDs and computer data CDs. Below is a picture of the front and back of a standard CD-ROM drive.

  • CPU

                                                                                       computerhope.com

Alternatively referred to as the brain of the computer, processor, central processor, or microprocessor. The computer CPU is responsible for handling all instructions it receives from hardware and software running on the computer. The processor is placed and secured into a compatible CPU socket found on the motherboard, and because of the heat it produces it is covered with a heat sink to help keep it cool and running smoothly.  the CPU chip is usually in the shape of a square or rectangle and will have one notched corner to help place the chip into the computer properly. On the bottom of the chip are hundreds of connector pins that plug into each of the corresponding holes on the socket. In the CPU, the primary components are the ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) that performs mathematical, logical, and decision operations and the CU (Control Unit) that directs all of the processors operations.

  • Hard Drive

Alternatively referred to as a hard disk drive and abbreviated as HD or HDD, the hard drive is the computer's main storage media device that permanently stores all data on the computer.  The desktop hard drive has six components: the head actuator, read/write actuator arm, read/write head, spindle, and platter. On the back of a hard drive is a circuit board called the disk controller.

  • Motherboard

Alternatively referred to as the mb, mainboard, mobo, mobd, backplane board, base board, main circuit board, planar board, system board, or a logic board on Apple computers. The motherboard is a printed circuit board that is the foundation of a computer and allows the CPU, RAM, and all other computer hardware components to function and communicate with each other.

Motherboard components:
  •     Expansion slots (PCI Express, PCI, and AGP)
  •     3-pin case fan connectors
  •     Back pane connectors
  •     Heatsink
  •     4-Pin (P4) power connector
  •     Inductor
  •     Capacitor
  •     CPU Socket
  •     Northbridge
  •     Screw hole
  •     Memory slot
  •     Super I/O
  •     Floppy connection
  •     ATA (IDE) disk drive primary connection
  •     24-pin ATX power Supply connector
  •     Serial ATA connections
  •     Coin cell battery (CMOS backup battery)
  •     RAID
  •     System panel connectors
  •     FWH
  •     Southbridge
  •     Serial port connector
  •     USB headers
  •     Jumpers
  •     Integrated circuit
  •     1394 headers
  •     SPDIF
  •     CD-IN
  • RAM
Alternatively referred to as main memory, primary memory, or system memory, Random Access Memory (RAM) is a computer storage location that allows information to be stored and accessed quickly from random locations within DRAM on a memory module. Because information is accessed randomly instead of sequentially like a CD or hard drive the computer is able to access the data much faster than it would if it was only reading the hard drive. However, unlike ROM and the hard drive RAM is a volatile memory and requires power in order to keep the data accessible, if power is lost all data contained in memory lost.

  • Sound Card
Alternatively referred to as a sound board or an audio card, a sound card is an expansion card or integrated circuit that provides a computer with the ability to produce sounds that can be heard by the user either over speakers or headphones.

Uses of a computer sound card:
  •     Games
  •     Audio CDs and listening to music
  •     Watch movies
  •     Audio conferencing
  •     Creating and playing Midi
  •     Educational software
  •     Business presentations
  •     Record dictations
  •     Voice recognition

  • Video Card

Alternatively referred to as a display adapter, graphics card, video adapter, video board, or a video controller, a video card is an internal circuit board that allows a display device such as a monitor to display images from the computer. A video card with three connections or video ports on the back, the standard VGA connector, S-Video connector, and the DVI connector.

  •  DVD
Short for Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc, a DVD or DVD-ROM, is a disc capable of storing large amounts of data on one disc the size of a standard Compact Disc. To play a DVD on a computer a user must have a DVD drive as well as a DVD player, which is a software program designed to play and control a DVD disc.(image from findicons.com)

  •  HARDDISK

    bit-tech.net
When you save data or install programs on your computer, the information is typically written to your hard disk. The hard disk is a spindle of magnetic disks, called platters, that record and store information. Because the data is stored magnetically, information recorded to the hard disk remains intact after you turn your computer off.
